Your body is at it’s best if given the appropriate care and attention. Whether you’re attending gym classes, playing sport, coming back from injury or following a training plan, your effectiveness and recovery could be enhanced by a programme of sports therapy.

Sports Therapy is an aspect of healthcare that is specifically concerned with the prevention of injury and the rehabilitation of the patient back to optimum levels of functional, occupational and sports specific fitness, regardless of age and ability.

It utilises the principles of sport and exercise sciences incorporating physiological and pathological processes to prepare the participant for training, competition and where applicable, work.

Sports Therapy incorporates:

  • Utilise sports and exercise principles to optimise performance, preparation and injury prevention programmes
  • Provide the immediate care of injuries and basic life support in a recreational, training & competitive environment
  • Assess, treat and, where appropriate, refer on for specialist advice and intervention.
  • Provide appropriate sport and remedial massage in a sport & exercise context
  • Plan and implement appropriate rehabilitation programmes

Which can include:

  • Sports-specific training
  • Functional training
  • Strength and conditioning
  • Therapeutic exercise
  • Stretching, flexibility and mobility training
  • Core stability exercise

The demand for Sports Therapy grew as active individuals sourced alternative therapies to keep them fit and healthy. Sports Therapy is also beneficial and can be utilised by people outside of sports and exercise, as it focuses on correcting and restoring the musculoskeletal system. Sports massage is an integral part within any sports therapy session. Sports massage is a specialised form of massage that was developed to address the particular needs of participants of sports and exercise. It is typically used before, during and after physical events, as well as part of training maintenance during the sporting calendar.

There are many purposes to a sports massage which can include; preparing the participant for peak performance, to aid the lymphatic drainage system, to relieve swelling, to reduce muscle tension, to promote and restore flexibility and range of motion, to reduce injuries occurring and to support faster recovery from injury.

This will help reduce feelings of stress, promote feelings of wellbeing, maintain the body in better condition and help extend the overall life of a participant’s athletic career.
